As you can see from the diagram below, a circular metal blank is concentrically clamped against the spinning pattern via the centre nose and a centre wood. Whilst the pattern is driven in the by a main motorised spindle. Rotating at high speed the work piece is then formed by a spinning tool or roller following a pre set path to produce a series of strokes or passes.
A number of passes are normally needed to form the part onto the spinning pattern which also prevents premature failure through slpitting or buckling.
Another variation of this process is called Shear forming and is normally used to make cone shapes as only on pass is needed.
